Otoplasty – Ear Surgery

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the ears.
It is most commonly performed to correct what are popularly known as “prominent ears” or “protruding ears” (sometimes referred to as “Dumbo ears”), though other types of ear corrections may also be addressed.

Otoplasty, or prominent ear correction, is often performed before a child starts school (by the age of 6), although it can be done at any age.

This condition is usually easily recognized by parents and family members and should be openly discussed with an ENT specialist or plastic surgeon.

Once identified, each case depends primarily on the motivation of the parents and the child. Otoplasty is a safe procedure with well-defined indications.
If not performed before age 6, it may result in significant psychological distress, potentially affecting the child’s development and self-esteem. Careful parental observation and an early consultation with an ENT specialist or plastic surgeon are essential.

How is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty is performed through an incision behind the ear – which means there are no visible scars.

During the procedure, the “memory” of the misshapen cartilage is removed using various techniques. The skin incision is then closed with the ears already positioned in their new, corrected placement.

Otoplasty Post-Operative Care

Post-operative care following otoplasty is absolutely essential for the success of the procedure.

It is crucial that the patient sleeps with the ears protected and held close to the head for approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

This can be achieved using various supportive techniques, helping to prevent the ears from folding or shifting position during sleep as the patient turns from side to side.

Pain is generally mild and well-controlled with appropriate medication.
